9 fields for a BMS-to-host message dictionary

Define what each message means, when it is valid and how the host responds. Nine fields make a communication agreement more useful than a list of message identifiers alone.

What to bring to the review

  • Exact battery, host and relevant charger revisions
  • Confirmed requirements, proposed targets and unresolved questions kept separate
  • A responsible owner and evidence location for each decision

9 fields for a BMS-to-host message dictionary

Use a row with field number, requirement, responsible party, revision, evidence link and decision. Keep the original measurements or documents available to the authorized project team. Mark missing evidence as open; do not replace it with an estimated pass.

  • 1. Identifier: name the message and the interface-document revision.
  • 2. Direction: identify the sender, receiver and request-response relationship.
  • 3. Encoding: define field position, length, signedness and byte order.
  • 4. Units: state scaling, offset and the physical meaning of each reported value.
  • 5. Validity: distinguish available, unavailable, invalid and stale data.
  • 6. Timing: agree update, timeout and recovery behavior for the actual application.
  • 7. Fault meaning: separate warnings, protection events and communication failures.
  • 8. Host action: define who limits, inhibits, stops or requests recovery.
  • 9. Evidence: link representative exchanges to exact BMS and host firmware revisions.

Use the record to make a scoped decision

Use agreed example messages to check decoding at both ends, including boundary and unavailable-value cases. Test timeout handling separately from normal traffic. Keep a warning or stale value distinct from permission to operate; the host action must follow the agreed interface and system requirements.

Keep acceptance limits explicit

A protection board does not necessarily provide a digital communication interface. Confirm the actual hardware and agreed protocol before specifying messages.

Technical context and limits

This protector illustrates that protection functions, thresholds and delays are device-specific. Consult the documentation for the actual hardware. Citing this example does not identify a component used by Jinfan or establish system qualification.

Common questions

Does the checklist count specify a product rating?

No. The number counts the fields in this worksheet. It is not a measured result, a quality score, a certification, a minimum order quantity or a promise of delivery time.

What should be shared with engineering first?

Share a non-confidential requirements summary, the relevant revisions and unresolved decisions through Technical RFQ. Agree a suitable private exchange before sending sensitive drawings or customer records.
