What to bring to the review
- Exact battery, host and relevant charger revisions
- Confirmed requirements, proposed targets and unresolved questions kept separate
- A responsible owner and evidence location for each decision
6 review gates before accepting a battery cell substitution
Use a row with field number, requirement, responsible party, revision, evidence link and decision. Keep the original measurements or documents available to the authorized project team. Mark missing evidence as open; do not replace it with an estimated pass.
- 1. Exact identity: compare the approved and proposed manufacturer, model and datasheet revision.
- 2. Operating envelope: review charge, discharge, voltage and temperature conditions for the actual application.
- 3. Pack interaction: review protection, sensing, gauging and charging assumptions.
- 4. Assembly definition: check dimensional, connection and process consequences with the production owner.
- 5. Evidence impact: identify affected performance, transport and other model-specific documentation.
- 6. Approval: document required evaluations, results, authorized revision and stock-separation arrangements.
Use the record to make a scoped decision
Create a difference record that cites the old and proposed documents. Mark each assumption unchanged, changed or unknown, then assign the review and evaluation scope. Keep the substitute outside the accepted production baseline until the responsible parties approve the evidence and change record.
Keep acceptance limits explicit
Equal mAh or matching dimensions do not establish equivalence. Whether transport retesting is required depends on the actual change and applicable requirements.
Technical context and limits
PHMSA explains the lithium battery transport test-summary requirement. Use the actual model and revision when reviewing supplied documentation. A transport summary is separate from application performance and complete appliance qualification.
